L’article examine les recherches sur le sommeil paradoxal et le rêve depuis une cinquantaine d’années. Il compare les approches psychophysiologiques et neurophysiologiques mises en œuvre aux États-Unis (Kleitman et Dement) et en France (Jouvet) pour l’étude des corrélats cérébraux de l’expérience mentale du rêve. On montre comment des données récentes ont permis de consolider l’association entre rêve proprement dit et certains états d’activation corticale au cours du sommeil.

The paper examines research, on paradoxical sleep and on dream for the past fifty years. It compares the psychophysiological and neurophysiological approaches experimented in the US (Kleitman and Dement) and in France (Jouvet) when one studies the brain correlates of the mental experience of dream. We show how recent data enabled one to consolidate the association between the dream proper and some states of cortical activation in the course of sleep.

Après la « révolution cognitive » des années 1960, une seconde révolution a, lors des années 1980, placé la conscience au cœur du problème des bases matérielles de l’ « esprit », là où se concentrent les difficultés intellectuelles et les controverses idéologiques, en particulier l’affrontement entre dualisme et monisme matérialiste. Dans ce débat, un argument décisif est apporté par le fait que la neurobiologie de la conscience est non seulement possible mais est déjà très avancée sur certains points. After the « cognitive revolution » in the 1960’s, a second revolution, in the course of the 1980’s, set consciousness at the heart of the problem of material bases for the mind, i.e. where new intellectual difficulties and ideological controversies gather together with special reference to the confrontations between dualism and materialistic monism. In such a debate, a decisive argument is brought forth through the fact that a neurobiology of consciousness is not only possible but also already quite advanced on some points.
